What is Grid Radio?

Grid Radio is a radio station whose only artist is the Gridcoin blockchain. Every block staked on the network is compiled into a short piece of ambient music, using nothing but its 32-byte hash, and put on air. A new block arrives roughly every 90 seconds, so the programme never stops and never repeats.

Is the music really deterministic?

Yes. The mapping from hash to score is a frozen, versioned pure function (gridradio:v1). Each byte of the hash has a fixed job: one picks the key, one the scale, one the tempo, and the rest walk the melody and place the bass and bells. The same hash produces the same score forever, on any conformant player. Block 2,000,000 will sound the way it sounds in twenty years.

Why does it sound musical instead of random noise?

Music theory, applied by rule. The melody walks mostly by step, leaps must land on tones of the chord underneath, dissonance only ever passes through in motion, and every tune cadences home to its root. A third of blocks play in pentatonic scales, where nothing can clash by construction; the rest sing in diatonic church modes, kept consonant by the same counterpoint rules composers have used for centuries. The hash still decides everything: where the rests fall, how hard each note is struck, where the bells land.

Can I pick favorites and share them?

Yes. Every block can be liked, on its page or right on the live broadcast, one like per listener per block, and the most loved tunes are ranked on the charts. Every tune can also be shared by its permanent link, with a preview card that carries the block's own sky and dial, or embedded on any website with a small player that performs the block right there. There are no accounts; the station just counts the love, and how many times each tune has been heard.

What does a blockchain actually sound like?

On Grid Radio: slow ambient. Detuned drones, plucked and felt-piano leads, soft bass, distant bells, all between a glacial 30 and an unhurried 90 BPM through delay and reverb that the block also chooses. Most sonification projects map network events to blips; Grid Radio composes instead, so a block sounds like a finished piece with a form, a chord progression, and an ending. The mood ranges from clear pentatonic skies to darker church modes, and the network difficulty sets how bright the whole station sounds.

How is this different from other endless ambient music apps?

Like Generative.fm or similar endless ambient players, Grid Radio plays calm generative music forever, free and without an account. The difference is where the music comes from: the generative seed is not a random number but a public blockchain. Every tune belongs to a real Gridcoin block, is reproducible by anyone from the block hash, has a permanent page, and was ultimately caused by someone computing for science. The playlist is consensus itself, and it never repeats.

How do I get my own tune on the air?

Do the science. Gridcoin pays volunteers in GRC for real computational research through BOINC, from protein folding to astronomy. Earn by crunching, and when your wallet stakes a block, that block is compiled into a tune only it could produce and played on air. It keeps its page in the archive forever. There is no other way to get on this station: the only path to the stage is through science.

What decides how bright or dark the sound is?

The network weather. Staking difficulty opens and closes a filter on the drone: when the network works harder, the station sounds brighter. The song comes from the block; the sky comes from the chain.

Accepted Answer

The block's, like everything else. The hash paints the sky its own three colors, sets the weather in motion, and styles the dial the spectrum plays on: how many marks, which way it turns, how fast. It even decides what hangs inside the dial: about half the blocks keep a quiet void, a third burn a soft glow that pulses through the block's palette, and one in eight collapses into a black hole with its own accretion ring. Two listeners on opposite sides of the world see byte-identical skies.
